There are no religious obligations to follow except custom. Ashkenazic Jews give the Hebrew name of a relative who is no longer alive. Sephardic Jews name a baby after a living relative if possible. The English and Hebrew names may coincide. If you are dealing with a Yiddish name and wish to convert it to modern Hebrew, I will help you with it.
